“Wisdom & Transcendence in the Modern University”: Lecture with Fr. Philippe Capelle-Dumont
Thursday, October 1st (5:00pm)
The Newman Centre at McGill kicks off its series of annual lectures with a talk by Fr. Philippe Capelle-Dumont, a distinguished French scholar serving as a key Vatican consultant on higher education.
Elaborating on a theme of John Henry Newman, the great 19th-century intellectual and English convert to Catholicism, Fr. Capelle-Dumont will argue that wisdom and transcendence are essential components of higher education, even within secular colleges and universities! Whether you are studying in the humanities or in the sciences, Fr. Capelle-Dumont will have something for you to chew on.
Join us on Thursday, October 1st at 5:00 p.m. at the Newman Centre, with a reception to follow. Free event. Visit the Newman Centre’s website for more details.
YOUCAT on Tap: “Why should I go to Mass on Sunday?”
Friday, October 2nd (5:00-7:00pm)
Imagine that midterm season has already hit, and papers and exams are beginning to overwhelm you, and you are in the library at 4:55pm on a Sunday afternoon, and all of a sudden you remember “ooh, it’s almost time for Mass.” A part of you feels like you should probably go to Mass but you are not sure why. It would definitely be more convenient to keep studying. Then maybe you say to yourself, “Well, I need a study break anyways so I may as well go to Mass…although, I could also go for dinner, or go for a jog, or take a nap…” The real question here is why do we even need to go to Mass on Sunday anyways? Does it really matter? Why is it important?
Join us for our next YOUCAT on Tap on Friday, October 2nd, as we explore what the Mass is really all about and answer the question “Why should we bother to go every Sunday?” Beer and pizza service begins at 5:00pm while our topic discussion begins at 5:30pm. All are welcome!

“Called to Love” – The Canadian Catholic Students Association (CCSA) Central Region Conference
October 23rd-25th
All Catholic post-secondary students are invited to the University of Toronto Newman Centre for the 2015 Canadian Catholic Students Association Regional Conference. Throughout the course of the weekend, there will be opportunities for prayer, worship, talks, workshops, networking with other students, sightseeing, and more!
Our theme is formed around the Synod on Marriage and Family that will be concluding the same weekend as the conference. Keynotes and workshops will aim to give us a better understanding of many of the topics covered during the Synod, and will be given by accomplished speakers from Regis College, St. Augustine’s Seminary and even beyond the Archdiocese! Participants can expect to depart from the weekend having met many other amazing students, being strengthened in their faith, and gaining a deeper understanding of the vocation to marriage and family life, as well as other vocations in the Church and how they spring from authentic and strong family life.
The registration deadline is Friday, October 9, 2015. While everyone is welcome to attend, the NCSS has pledged to sponsor one student to attend and represent the McGill Newman Centre at this conference. If you are interested, please contact our campus minister, Terrel Joseph, at .

Faith Studies
Starting the week of September 20th (times vary)
Do you have questions about your faith? Are you looking to make God more relevant in your life? Would it be helpful to have useful tools with which to present the Gospel message clearly and simply in any situation? Faith studies are small groups of students, led by a trained student guide, that meet once a week over the course of six weeks during the semester to learn about the Catholic faith using specially prepared study guides from Catholic Christian Outreach.
The first study in the series is called Discovery. Discovery is an exploration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and covers questions like (1) Why did God create us? (2) Who is Jesus? (3) Why did Jesus die the way he did? (4) How can Jesus be more relevant to our lives? For those who are not Catholic, Discovery is a great introduction to what Catholics believe and why. For those who are Catholic, Discovery helps participants to make sense of all the different puzzle pieces of faith knowledge that we have learned over the years and understand more clearly how they all fit together.
Faith studies will be starting about two weeks from now. If you are interested in participating, please sign up using one of the sign-up sheets at the Newman Centre or by emailing our VP Spiritual, Katerina Leung, at .
Newman Centre Choir Looking for Members
The Newman Centre Choir is recruiting new members. In particular, we are looking for new pianists to accompany the choir on a rotating basis. The Newman Centre Choir leads music for Sunday Masses and Solemnities, such as the Academic Mass, the Easter Triduum, as well as for Eucharistic Adoration, Taizé, and other special occasions.
We practice at 4:00pm each Sunday before Mass. You are welcome to simply show up to try a rehearsal and see if you are interested in joining. For more information, please contact the Choir Director, Genevieve Mays, at .
Choose Life Looking for Leadership Team
Choose Life is McGill University’s pro-life club and the only student pro-life club in Quebec. Unfortunately, although it remains a registered SSMU club, it has been inactive for the last couple of years due to a lack of leadership after the departure of its previous president.
If you are interested in helping to rejuvenate Choose Life by becoming part of its leadership team this year, please contact William Manning at .

A New Roof, Finally!
The badly needed refurbishment of our century-old slate roof is nearly complete and it is looking fantastic. We raised over $130,000 before the summer break, thanks to Pillars Trust ($50,000), the St. Patrick’s Foundation ($75,000), students, alumni and their families. Our goal over the next three years, with your help, is to raise an additional $270,000 to pay down the debt.

Orientation Week Activities
Each year, McGill University holds an orientation week right before classes start to allow first-year students to become familiar with university life. We’re happy to be participating in two orientation week activities:
Discover McGill
September 1st (9:00am) at Molson Stadium
A key component of Discover McGill, the main orientation day for new students, is the University Fair, which showcases the different clubs, services, and groups at McGill. This year, the Fair is on Tuesday, September 1st at 9:00am.
This is our primary opportunity to introduce ourselves and the Newman Centre to new students. We could really use your help in manning our table, introducing yourselves to the new students and inviting them to become part of the Newman community. We’ll be creating a spreadsheet soon for people to sign up for individual time slots; for now, please contact our VP Outreach Ajoy Paul at or our campus minister Terrel Joseph at if you are interested.
À La Carte Panel Discussion: “Why Catholic?”
September 4th (12:00pm) at the Newman Centre
Another part of Orientation Week is the À La Carte orientation events held by individual clubs, services, and groups at McGill. Last year, the Newman Centre hosted a panel discussion with students and professors on “Is Religion Irrelevant?”
This year, on Friday, September 4th at 12:00pm (tentative), we’re continuing that tradition with a panel discussion on “Why Catholic?” at the Newman Centre. The event is open to everyone, old and new. We will have great speakers, good food, and an amazing time. See you then!
Saturday Night Supper
September 5th (5:00pm)
The Newman Catholic Students’ Society has a longstanding tradition of hosting a supper every Saturday night, prepared by members of the Newman community. For only $5, you get a full meal, including dessert.
Our first Saturday night supper this year is on September 5th at 5:00pm (though it’ll be held at 6:00pm thereafter). Please come join us and share a great meal and great conversation!
Fish Frosh
September 3rd-7th (starting at 2:00pm at Roddick Gates)
Welcome to all freshmen and transfer students! With the intention of introducing you to our city, our campus, and our community here at McGill, the University’s various Christian clubs are coming together from September 3rd-7th to host Fish Frosh, a weeklong series of activities and events open to any and all incoming students, regardless of their age or belief. Activities include a treasure hunt around downtown, an interdenominational worship night, field trips around the island, and more!
For more information or to register as a leader, volunteer or participant, please visit the official Fish Frosh website. You can also sign up directly if you’re interested in tabling. Hope to see you there!
Academic Mass and Welcome Back BBQ
September 11th (4:00pm, with BBQ at 5:30pm)
Join us as we pull out all the stops for our annual Academic Mass (Solemn Mass of the Holy Spirit) on Friday, September 11th at 4:00pm followed at 5:30 pm by our traditional garden BBQ with fresh, homemade burgers. Invite a friend!

World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation
September 1st (7:00pm)
On June 18, 2015 Pope Francis published the first encyclical on ecology in which he speaks of environmental issues and stresses the need for all Christians to be actively involved in the Care of Creation and in finding solutions to reduce the current ecological crisis. It is within this context, that the Pope instituted a World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, to be held on September 1, the date on which the Orthodox churches have been praying for this intention for several years.
